Latvian video art Screening and Meeting with a curator MaYa Mikelsone

A Latvian video art screening and a meeting with a Latvian curator Maya Mikelsone will take place on Friday, 25th of November, 2011, 7PM at the culture centre „Mains d’Œuvres”, 1 Charles Garnier Street, 93400 Saint-Ouen.

Recent tendencies of Latvian video art in a unique one hour screening will include the video works from the “Waterpieces Contemporary and Video Art Festival” as well as the other works by emerging Latvian multimedia artists. “Waterpieces” festival is organized annually by culture and arts project NOASS (www.noass.lv), Riga, which among others is promoting, holding and updating the Latvian Video Art Archive from the 1980ties until nowadays.

The video art screening will be followed by a discussion about the works and a meeting with a young Latvian curator Maya Mikelsone who is currently living and working in France.

Maya Miķelsone has finished her studies of Aesthetics at the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne, then an international curatorial training programme at „École du Magasin” in Grenoble. She has worked in several contemporary art galleries, in the Foundation Cartier (2008-2009) and in the contemporary art museum of Bordeaux (2011). In 2010 together with the 19th course of the curatorial training program she organized a multidisciplinary program in the National Contemporary Art Centre of Grenoble “How not to make an exhibition” which was supplemented by the edition merging the text of Nelson Godman’s book “L’Art en théorie et en action” and the photographic project of a Latvian artist Ivars Gravlejs. In 2011 she collaborated with the artist Élise Leclerq in her solo exhibition „Gestures of Experience” and together with the participants of 3rd International Gwangju Biennial Curators’ Course co-curated the video art program “Global House” shown in the Gwangju Art Space, Gwangju Design Biennial, Latvian Contemporary Art Centre and „Flat Space” in Moldova.

Event is organized by Inga Lace in cooperation with the culture and arts project NOASS. Inga Lace is a culture projects’ manager currently working at “Mains d’Œuvres” in the framework of the European Voluntary Service program. She has finished a Culture Management Master’s Program in the Latvian Academy of Culture (2010), worked as the public relations coordinator in the Riga City Exhibition Hall “Riga Art Space” (2008-2010), organized a youth education program “Behind the Scenes” in the Contemporary Art Centre kim?, Riga, (2010) and a project “Creative Dreams Factory” within the contemporary art festival “Survival kit 2” (2010).

Entering its second decade, this year’s “International Contemporary and Video Art Festival WATERPIECES” will set off around the world, offering visitors to the festival not only the latest trends and developments within video art, but also colourful and attractive selections of works from the most diverse countries and regions.

From 2 – 4 September we will kick off the festival with a creative animation workshop “Naïve animation at the Naïve Art Museum” which will be run by “Multenkulten” Studio, and attended by a select group of invited participants aged from 16 – 116 years. Apply for the workshop.

This year’s Waterpieces Festival has the special honour of welcoming the travelling video festival “CologneOFF – Video Art in the Global Context” programme, which combines video selections from all over the world. On the opening day of the festival, a lecture on video art in the global context will be given by CologneOFF Director Wilfried Agricola de Cologne.

“Cologne OFF” is one of the world’s most notable video festivals and stands out through the geographical diversity of its video selections, as well as the number of art curators it invites. Throughout 2011, the travelling video festival programme has visited more than 40 countries across six continents.

The festival’s traditional nightly outdoor screenings will also be held continuing the festival’s long-standing collaboration with the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, as well as the Japan Media Arts Festival.

This year, Oberhausen will present a programme of video works by young artists, while over two evenings the Japan Media Arts Festival will showcase the latest achievements in technology, as well as accenting the impact of pop culture and the development of video.

As part of the “White Night” Contemporary Art Festival – saying neither yes nor no, nor white, nor black – the conclusion of Waterpieces will be rounded off by an evening of ambient music “Noisy Nature” (Skaļā darba), as well as a presentation of video works created by the participants in the animation workshop.

During the festival, “Betanovuss” Floating Arts Centre will host an exhibition in which five different selections of video works will be shown every evening, showcasing programmes compiled by different curators from all over the world comprised of colourful, vivid and captivating works of video art, as well as three works made by Finish video artist Eric Mutel in 2010 – “2x IS”, ”Warm up”, “Mute”.

As usual at the start of September we will begin the new working year and colourful autumn with the Waterpieces International Contemporary and Video Art Festival which this year will take place over three days from 8-10 September on AB Dambis, as well as at the NOASS and Betanovuss Floating Arts Centre.

We will begin the second decade of the festival with video programmes from the “Japan Media Arts Festival” and “The archive of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen”, as well as showcasing “CologneOFF – Video Art in the Global Context” – a three day travelling festival exhibition.

Cologne Off is a festival that has evolved from the Cologne Online Festival, which for several years has operated as an Internet-based network which unites art curators and video artists from all over the world. In order not to lose the essence of the festival as a network, CologneOFF has become a travelling contemporary art event and throughout 2011 it has drawn the attention of visitors to video as a global art medium rapidly gaining in popularity which, utilising the opportunities provided by a communications network, reaches far beyond the borders of countries and regions. During Waterpieces, special attention will be paid to the moving image’s unlimited means of expression, particularly highlighting the contribution of artists and curators in promoting video art across the globe.

This year we will also augment the festival with an informal discussion about video art and its latest developments which will be chaired by programme curators: Wilfried Agricola de Cologna and representatives of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.

Likewise, the 11th Waterpieces International Contemporary and Video Art Festival’s showcases and exhibition will be made more colourful by a three day masterclass “Naive Animation at Naive Art Museum” coordinated by “multenkulten” Studio, which has previously organised creative workshops at various festivals in Rīga, Liepāja, Cēsis and Ventspils. Participants in the Waterpieces Workshop will have the chance to create a video from recycled materials, and the works created during the masterclass will be presented to the public at the conclusion of the festival. The programme will be led by animator Kristīna Ratniece and architect Ivars Šmits.

Augmenting “multenkulten’s” showcase, as part of the White Night programme, a musical performance will be given on the final evening of the festival by “Bērnu rīts” (“Kids’ Morning”), presenting an evening of moving soundscapes entitled “Skaļā daba” (“Noisy nature”).

We further inform you that this year the annual best Baltic video work competition will not take place. In future, the competition will take place every second year and will be open to participants from the whole Baltic Sea region.

10. WATERPIECES CELEBRATED SUCCESSFULLY

From 3-5 September, the 10th International Contemporary and Video Art Festival “Waterpieces” took place on AB Dambis and the Betanovuss floating arts centre.

Over the years this festival has evolved from a small event attracting a narrow group of devotees to one of the most interesting and idiosyncratic events in the cultural life of Riga. And we were delighted that, in spite of the chilly autumnal weather, this year’s festival programme not only attracted its usual loyal fan base of video art lovers, but also proved to be a potent magnet for the artists themselves, art students, as well as curators from overseas, Rigans and visitors to the city.

More than 40 video works were submitted for the festival competition showcase not only from the Baltic States, but also from countries as far afield as Spain, the US and Indonesia. After a lively debate, the international jury comprised of Art Academy of Latvia lecturer Mārtiņš Ratniks (LV), Vilnius Art Academy video art lecturer Irma Stanaityte (LT) and Helen Tammemäe (EE) Editor in Chief of the arts magazine Müürileht concluded that the best ‘Waterpiece’ of 2010 was ‘In’, a work created by Lithuanian video artist Ieva Bernotaite. The artist herself describes her work as a “video performance that analyses the relationship between nature and culture.” This work was created with the assistance of a microphone with which Bernotaite conjured up a forest soundscape with a magical dexterity reminiscent of the twirl of a conductor’s baton.

In appreciation of her efforts, Irma Bernotaite was awarded the AB.LV Public Benefit Fund Prize of LVL 500 to go towards the creation of a new work of video art, as well as the Special Festival Grand Prix, a bronze ‘Waterpiece’ created by artist M. Zemītis.

We are also delighted by the fact that this year’s Top Three festival works were created by artists from all three Baltic States. A Merit Diploma was awarded to Estonian video artist Kristina Norman for her work ‘We Are Not Alone in the Universe’ which is the story of events that took place 15 years ago on a farm in Northern Estonia where a UFO was sighted. Latvian video artist Indriķis Ģelzis also received a recipient a Merit Diploma for his work “Inside/Outside” which the artist describes as follows, “We are all buried under some profession or experience. We disintegrate into ashes and are assimilated by earth, as a result of which, in becoming a tree or being mixed into concrete, we evolve into an object that shapes the surrounding environment. A carpenter becomes a table while a builder becomes part of a building. Communication goes on.”

Another award presented during the festival was the AB. LV Public Benefit Fund Special Favourite Prize, which was received by Edgars Lielzeltiņš for his work “Substitution – Gap”. The leitmotif chosen by the artist for his work was Robert Smithson’s idea that “The space between events can be called a gap. This gap exists in the form of voids which we never look at.”

Parallel to the festival programme, the premises of Culture and Arts Project NOASS also played host to a meeting of the ARTNET-Baltic-Nordic audio visual arts network which thanks to the support provided by the Nordic Culture Point attracted curators and artists from the Baltics and Scandinavia to Riga who came together to discuss the contemporary arts space in the Baltics and Nordic countries and the possibilities for its development and integration.

At the conclusion of the seminar it was concluded that as the centre point not only of the Baltics, but also that of the entire Baltic Sea region, Riga can become the city in which to represent the region’s contemporary culture trends through the organisation of similar meetings of this network on an annual basis. ABOUT WATERPIECES 2010

International Contemporary and Video Art Festival Waterpieces is the only festival in the Baltic States which offers its audience unusual sounds, and performances delineated by movements and images whose unifying element is the moving image.

This year, the festival will celebrate its 10^th anniversary and to mark the occasion, a special celebratory program will be offered to the audience. Special anniversary fireflies will adorn AB dambis from 3^rd to 5^th September – projected by monitors simultaneously presenting a showcase of the all time best Waterpieces. Parallel to the best works from the previous festivals, audiences will have the chance to see a showcase of the Baltic States video art competition and enjoy the special selections of the world known video festivals and experimental film archives.

As has become the custom, the festival will also present overseas programs showcasing the latest trends in global video art including a selection of works from 13^th Japan’s media arts festival, Sweden’s art film and video archive Filmform, Oslo Screen festival, Finland’s interdisciplinary artists’ association MUU, and a program from the archive of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.

Since moving images have moved outside the confines of the TV screen with the advent of contemporary technology; this year’s anniversary festival will focus on works in which the medium of video is fused with other means of expression.

And, of course, honoring tradition, the winner of the festival’s Grand Prix will be awarded a special Waterpiece award. In addition, thanks to the generous support of AB.LV Sabiedriskā Labuma fonds, the artist who has created the year’s best work of Baltic video art will also receive a cash prize of LVL 500, as well as the chance to put on a personal exhibition during next year’s Waterpieces festival.

Criteria for video works:

- Works must have been created during the past three years (no earlier than 2008) with subtitles in English or an accompanying translation of dialogue.

- The running time of a submitted work must not exceed 25 minutes.

- Additional information to be enclosed about the work: artist, title, year of production, and soundtrack.

- Works may be submitted on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM in the following formats: .avi, .DVavi, .mov, .mpg2, PAL, and DVD.

- Works must be submitted together with a completed Waterpieces 2010 application form.

- Two high resolution images (of the work) must also be attached to the application form.
